Data corruption is the accidental modification of a file or the losing of information which often occurs during reading or writing. The reason can be hardware or software malfunction, and consequently, a file may become partially or entirely corrupted, so it will no longer work properly as its bits shall be scrambled or lost. An image file, for example, will no longer show an authentic image, but a random combination of colors, an archive will be impossible to unpack as its content will be unreadable, and so on. When this kind of a problem appears and it's not noticed by the system or by an admin, the data will become corrupted silently and if this happens on a drive which is part of a RAID array where the information is synced between various drives, the corrupted file will be duplicated on all the other drives and the damage will become permanent. A number of widely used file systems either do not feature real-time checks or don't have good ones which will detect a problem before the damage is done, so silent data corruption is a rather common issue on hosting servers where huge volumes of information are stored.

The latter is more advanced than other file systems since it is the only one out there that checks all files in real time by employing a checksum - a digital identifier that's unique for each file. When you upload content to your account, it'll be stored on several SSD drives and regularly synchronized between them for redundancy. ZFS regularly compares the checksum of all files and if any file is detected as corrupted, it is replaced instantly with a good copy from some other disk. As this happens in real time, there is no risk that a damaged file may remain or may be duplicated on the other SSDs.
